Ferry to Portofino: A Scenic Start

We took the ferry from Santa Margherita Ligure along with the other tourists heading to Portofino to see what all the fuss was about. If you’ve never heard of Portofino, it’s a tiny town known for attracting the rich and famous—only about 500 permanent residents. Fun fact: Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker held their wedding reception at Castello Brown, a hilltop castle with gardens overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. While that’s not why we came, it’s a glimpse of the glamorous clientele this picturesque town attracts.

Arrival: Yachts, Colorful Buildings, and a Spritz by the Water

Pulling into Portofino’s dock, we passed luxurious yachts lining the harbor. We didn’t have a strict itinerary—just lunch reservations at Pescefino.

Before lunch, we strolled along the small promenade, searching for a spot to enjoy a spritz. Sitting next to the water, we watched fish swim beneath the boats, snacked on chips and olives, and soaked in the scenery. It’s easy to see why Portofino is so captivating, especially when the day-trippers eventually leave, leaving the town quiet and serene.

Lunch at Pescefino: A Picture-Perfect Experience

Lunch was a highlight. Pescefino sits above the promenade with a grassy area that feels like a fancy picnic overlooking the water.

We savored:

  • Pigato, a regional white wine
  • Red shrimp from Santa Margherita Ligure
  • Fresh seafood pasta
  • Grilled octopus with vegetables

The best part? We were the only diners at that time, making it feel like a private, peaceful experience. If you visit Portofino, booking in advance is essential. Pescefino offers reasonable prices considering Portofino’s high-end reputation, and the 5-star Google rating is well-deserved.

Exploring Portofino

After lunch, we were too full to visit the main attractions but did walk past the shops along the promenade. Even a short stroll reveals why tourists flock here—breathtaking views, charming streets, and a serene seaside vibe.
